Heritage Issues on Grand Design

Such an interesting episode of Grand Designs tonight, focussing on two heritage buildings being converted in to a new modern family home. So many interesting issues raised, gotta love Kevin McLeod. Like when protecting and conserving buildings, which period do you choose to ‘save’? What do you keep, what do you resurrect in new materials, how faithful do you be using new techniques and materials? And what is the value in keeping the frame of a building without the adornment or finishes? Interesting the owner deemed it ‘inappropriate’ to be forced to put on new roof tiles rather than use old roof tiles from a completely different building, because they should look old.

Anyway, a really interesting episode, try and catch it on iview if u missed it.

Oh, and there’s a PS talk on tomorrow (Tuesday)  at The Bakery at 6pm, should be quite good. Featuring a Dulux Tour attendee, the EmaGN Emerging Architect Prize WA winner, the editors of The Weather Ring … hope to see you there.

Protection for Langley Park

Langley Park has been ‘interimly’ (is that a word?) listed on the State Heritage Register. The 11.7 ha grassland area was created by land reclamation from the river between 1921 and 1935.

“Langley Park has considerable historic value for its social, cultural and recreational uses and is very worthy of heritage listing. The park contributes significantly to the Perth community’s sense of place.” Heritage Minister John Castrilli said.

So…I guess no development along there then…

Increased Penalties Proposed for Demolition of Heritage

December 18, 2010 1 comment

Heritage Minister John Castrilli is proposing harsher penalties for the unauthorised demolition or development of a State-listed heritage building. The current maximum penalty under the Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990 is $5 000 with the Planning and Development Act 2005 imposing a further $50 000 penalty. Proposed changes to these acts could see the penalty rise to a maximum of $1 000 000 with a daily penalty of $50 000, a development moratorium being placed on the building for 10 years, and restoration orders for rectification of unauthorised works. Hopefully this will provide more of a disincentive for demolishing valuable buildings, but I guess will also make the selling of State-registered buildings more difficult.

Perth Walking Tours

Just read about Two Feet & a Heartbeat in today’s West Weekend magazine, that two Ryans started about three years ago. They conduct walking tours through Perth and Freo, complete with personal stories and historical facts. These sound really good, and are actually not that expensive. They are running some tours for this week’s Heritage Perth festival, but also seem to run tours fairly regularly. I love this idea and wish I had heard of it earlier. Keen to go and book one now, a great idea for a Christmas present for the person who has everything? Well done lads.

Going New School on Perth’s Heritage

October 28, 2010 3 comments

Heritage Perth has developed a new walk trail featuring information on CBD buildings like the Perth Town Hall, His Majesty’s Theatre, the Cloisters etc. You can download a map from their website, and then when you’re at certain spots check back on the website to listen to (or sometimes read) the background stories of the buildings. There’s also an Art Deco Walk for who want to find out a bit more about the Piccadilly Theatre, Criterion Hotel and the YHA, amongst others.

That’s a Lot of Heritage

Perth has just registered its 1300th entry on the State Register of Heritage Places, which has been going since 1992. The latest entry is the Aquinas College Administration Building and Chapel.

South Freo Power Station

I really wish they would retain the South Freo Power Station, its such a beautiful building. It would make a great hotel or apartments, it has such a nice feel and sense of space, and pretty good views. So i love this blog post showing off some of its funky graffiti, and thought I’d share. There are also some great photos on Flickr, such an interesting building. Its unfortunate that its so derelict now, its getting to the stage when they have to just do something with it, or knock it down (can guess which option Coogee Marina developers will be happier with!) as its just such a mess. Not sure who owns it? There’s some great street art in there though – maybe just keep it as a gallery!

Look Up Perth

I’ve always liked looking up in the city at the old buildings above the quick and simple glass fronted shops. There’s some beautiful buildings, and some great detailing of times gone past. And I love imagining what goes on behind all those windows up there. Heritage Perth started a programme in 2007 called ‘Look Up Perth’, and I’ve just noticed the signs up for this again today. There’s supposed to be a podcast available to learn more, that you can listen to as you walk through the city – but I can’t get the link to work. And apparently people from Heritage Perth occasionally give tours on the heritage of the buildings – for more info on Heritage Perth have a look here.
