Dulux Study Tour Blog

For those like me who are super jealous of the winners of the Dulux Study Tour who are having an amazing jaunt around Europe, you can now follow their adventures via their blog. blog

They are in Barcelona at the moment, and must be nearly at the end of their adventure.

Happy travels. I assume the Perth delegate Carly Barrett will let us know about her journey soon.

The Family Architecture

So I watched The Lake House a few weeks ago, which features Keanu Reeves as an architect, struggling with his Dad’s fame as a ‘master architect’ and I got to thinking about architectural families. When I was growing up I didn’t know any architects, I didn’t even know of anyone who had gone to uni. Sure I’d seen the parents in The Brady Bunch and Family Ties and it all looked pretty glamorous, but I really didn’t know much more than insights from bad TV shows. So I wonder, for those whose parents, aunties, uncles, grandparents, cousins, siblings were architects, did they try to put you off? Did they encourage you, and give you a greater understanding of ALL the roles of an architect, not just the simplified version? Does it put more pressure on you to live up to people’s expectations, for example if your parent was a wellknown architect? And…would you encourage your children to take up this fascinating, stressful, creative, exciting, crazy profession?

Architect Barbie

March 11, 2011 3 comments

So after years of filling out her log book working for peanuts at a multinational firm where she got to work her butt of watching the senior associates schmooze clients while she finished up details at dawn, Barbie finally her log book, passed her exams and paid her exorbitant registration fees. Yes Barbie is an architect, architect complete with drawing roll, hard hat and completely impractical site boots. Apparently she only does pink barbie houses though, which is perfect for her rich Margaret River clients. Great to see after all these years, and just following the centenary anniversary of International Womens Day, that feminism has finally reached the construction industry. Love it. But the question is, would I buy one for my niece?

Grand Lane Upgrade

January 8, 2011 2 comments

I’ve read a bit about the Grand Lane upgrade so thought I’d go check it out. The artwork is fantastic and the mural looks great.  While it is a magnificent display of some great art, and in such a central city place, the location is a little bit odd. On one side of the alley is this brilliant display and on the other side are the smelly back doors of restaurants and rubbish bins. And there is barely enough space for a group to walk past and admire it. This might change after the completion of the Wellington Street works maybe? It’d be great if there is a plan to have something else in this area – bar, retail, office etc, but I just don’t see how that would fit.

Anyway, as a standalone piece of art its great and I would encourage everyone to go have a look. The alley can be accessed through the entry between McDonalds and Myers on Murray Street. Because of its strange location it is quite hidden away (I was the only one in the lane when I walked through on a busy Friday night), and therefore hasn’t been tagged – yet.

Brisbane Christmas Trees

OK, so not a Perth architecture story, but I really like this concept – where artists, architects, designers have got together to produce their idea of a Christmas tree, displayed in a public space.  A neat idea – maybe something to think about for us next year? Kind of like the Art in Bloom exhibit at the Art Gallery, though I’m not sure if that’s included architects for the past few years?

Anyway, happy holidays all, hope you’re all geared up to get back to work…!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas readers. Here’s hoping everyone gets a nice break from the office, enough time to catch up with friends and family, and a good haul from Santa (if you’ve been good!) Thanks for reading my little blog through the year, and I hope there are many more posts to come next year.

Happy Holidays!

Well I can’t find a lot of news on things going on this month, I guess everyone’s caught up in the end-of-year rush. Anyone heard anything interesting?…
