Congratulations Emerging Architect

Congratulations to Kelly Rattigan, director of Formworks, on winning the national Emerging Architects Prize at the AAAA last week. Well done Kelly, great to have the representation from our state at national level, particularly in the ‘emerging’ category. There’s a good jury citation in a tweet – not sure if I can link to it but let’s see how this this goes.

Other winners on the night were : Samuel Jeeyaseelan from Uni of SA – Student Prize for the Advancement of Architecture.
Professor Rob Adams and the City Design Division, City of Melbourne – Leadership in Sustainability Prize.
Professor Shane Murray, RMIT and Monash Uni – the Neville Quarry Architectural Education Prize.
John Andrews – William J. Mitchell International Committee Prize.
Lucy Turnbull – National Presidents Prize
Adrian Kenyon, Uni of SA – Colorbond Steel Student Biennale

The (lucky!!) Dulux Study Tour winners are James Coombe, Melbourne; Anna Maskiell, Melbourne; Emily Ousten, Tasmania; Shaun Carter, Sydney and Weian Lim, Melbourne.

And the Gold Medal went to Lawrence Nield (putting the N into BVN).

Well done all

So the new entries this year were Suters and The Buchan Group. Those dropping off the list from last year were Woodhead, BVN and Denton Corker Marshall. Woods Bagot made a huge jump up the list, wonder what that’s all about?!

Interestingly, in the Australasia region, with practices ranked based on their earnings within the region, the top five firms were Australian firms – HASSELL, Woods Bagot, COX Architecture, HBO + EMTB and Suters Architects. The following five firms were Populous, Archetype Group, Foster & Partners, HKS Inc, Leo A Daly and DWP.

Thanks to Australian Design Review for the wrap-up.

The State of Australian Cities 2011

The 2011 Federal Government’s State of Australian Cities report has been released, rating Australia’s largest 18 cities, and comparing our cities with international examples. The Report identifies local council and state planning initiatives producing more sustainable, liveable urban communities, and identifies changes over the previous 12 months.

Over the past year, Aussies have been using less electricity, more public transport and ‘active travel’ (walking and biking) and producing less household waste. But we also have a shortage of 200 000 new homes across the nation.

The Government has also released a Action Plan for our Cities, aimed at encourage new innvoative solutions to urban sprawl, congestion, a lack of affordable housing and carbon pollution. States, territories and eligible local councils can apply for up to $500 000 for planning and design projects and up to $4 million for demonstration projects. Check here for more info.

The report leads in to a new urban design protocol, Creating Places for People, intended to encourage world-class design in our Australian cities to create prosperous, sustainable and liveable places for people through leadership and the integration of design excellence.
