About Me

I am a recently-registered architect in my thirties, working in Perth, WA. I am always on the lookout for architectural events and news happening in Perth, after getting frustrated with the amount of information coming out about architecture in the Eastern States. I would like to create a more vibrant, collaborative architectural community in Perth, and get a lot more public participation in, and understanding of, our profession.

If you’ve got anything to add please email me at pertharchitecture@live.com.au As you may be aware, architecture is more than a full-time job, and between the late nights and trying to have some semblance of a social/family life, there’s not a lot of time left over! But I will try to update this site as often as I can, so please come back and visit.

  2. Hi Perth Architecture,

    Just a query as to why my comment regarding the FiFo PS.10 talk was removed. Obviously you have editorial control of your own site – that is fine – but I wasn’t aware that there was anything unusual about what I wrote, I was merely taking up your invitation to comment and “feel free to disagree”.

    Just to remind you of what I wrote:
    1. I thought that the ARM project had some interesting aspects and was based on an interesting and genuine spatial and cultural reading of the environment of Hedland/the Pilbara.

    2. I thought that Paradigm’s project for South Hedland was a real achievement and that it should be applauded.

    On the latter issue I’m sure we agree with each other entirely.

    On the former we obviously took different interpretations from the same work. That happens with these sorts of presentations and it is why we have things such as blogs: To promote further discussion and debate within the profession and broader community. Your blurb above seems to suggest that you have a conscientious awareness of this which nevertheless makes it more puzzling as to why my comment would be removed.

    • Hi reditor – I certainly didn’t delete your comment – I really appreciate you taking the time to voice your opinion. Its a WordPress thing that I have to actually approve every comment before it is added to the page, and I was just a bit slack this week!

    • Hi Nick, I try and do as much of Perth (and WA) as I can. However as I just work on the site fairly infrequently around work etc, sometimes I miss stuff. So if you have anything to add please let me know!

    Thanks for the lovely post on the 3 over/4 under event last night. I am one of the Merge committee members and was really glad to see how successful the event turned out last night. It is getting better and better by the year and with more exposures to the fellow architects and students.

    We still have a few events left in the year, would you be happy to including them in your blog when the time comes closer? It will be lovely to get the words out in the workforce.

  15. Tried e-mailing you about a couple of Archtectural ‘issues’. But didn’t get a reply so maybe the posted e-mail address is out of date.

    There is growing concern in Freomentle about the process to rejeuvenate the Freo CBD.

    The Council did some good work in developing an Economic Strategy, part of which indicated a need for more office space additional accomadation for 1500 new residents, additonal retail space, etc. However, instead of then putting it out to Architects to submit ideas based on this general, basically statistic requirement, the councillors decided that 17 block east of Kings Sq should get, what seems like, fairly arbitiary increases in building height, ie changes to specific planning codes. No committment required from the owners to do anything at all, and rather the opposite some lease holders have said they wouldn’t expect much change within the next 15 years!

    So the city has no vision of what these 17 block might look like, no idea of POS, or community facility. In fact as 17 different buildings, they will have 17 different designs, 17 lots of fire escape, lifts, car parking, accomandation, and playspace for the pres school kids; unlikely to get Tri Gen or other Sustainable options, as 17 blocks the feasibility is difficult, etc.

    These changes are proposed in ‘Amendment 49’ up before Council again this week.

    Those who have spoken in favour, include several architects, I am guessing with vested interest. They spoke in favour of the Economic Strategy, as have all those against the proposal as it stands, but the archtiects didn’t talk about what the 17 block might achieve, their objective their look and integration.

    I don’t think is the way Architecture in Perth ought to be portrayed, do you?

    I am an architect from overseas and have recently relocated to Perth from Dubai (working there for 7 years and 12 years in Mumbai). I dont have too many contacts or friends here in our field.
    I came across your posts while searching for architecture firms on internet. Your comments and news are really interesting and I liked your forum a lot. I read almost all your articles and other people’s comments and discussions.
    I am currently looking for a job opportunity and to build contacts in the local practices. Do you have any words of advice or tips for a newcomer like me? Thanks.

    • Hi Shilpa Shetye. I am well known in Perth Archicuntral cirlcles and am pleased to lend a helping hand whenever I can, may I suggest you pay a peepole snugler to book you a passage to Christmas Island, with a bit of luck and a trusty drill it will be on a leaky boat that will sink, and you will be rescued by the Australian Navy and taken to Christmas Island, whereupon due to the distress you have been through you will be fast tracked to the Australian mainland, and be given a housing commision home, and assistance in getting a job as an *ARCHITECT*, where upon you can build a copy of the Taj Mahal in Peppermint Grove much to the envy of the local bogans. Good luck may all your dreams be wet ones.

      • I have been debating whether to delete this comment, or leave it as an example of a narrow-minded, ridiculously selfish, stupid, thoughtless mindset. Which I hope is in the minority. I really can’t believe you would write something like this, you do understand that people die on these boats right??! It’s not something to be flippant about. And what is their crime? They happened to be born in an unlucky country of war, famine, poverty, violence and illness. Get some knowledge of the world idiot.

      • Hi Raviraj,

        I would have liked to help you with contacts, unfortunately, I don’t have any. It’s difficult to break into architectural field in the present time. There are very few Indians working in pure architectural consultancies and most consultancies ask for australian experience and/or australian education.

        I am out of OZ right now, so can’t really help you there. My own experience wasn’t very encouraging so I don’t want to give you any particular advice, either good or bad. Its all about luck, I guess.

        I suggest that you Google search list of architects, you will find all in and around Perth. You can call them and send your cv and try directly. Good luck with your search!!!

    I came across your site and wanted to commend you on your work, it’s a very informative resource. I also have a question that you could maybe assist me with. I am currently completing a MSc in BIM and currently seek practical placement. I have experience working in Perth in a civil organisation but I am originally qualified in Architecture. I am curious about the current scene in Perth with regard to the migration to BIM. Are a lot of the architectural firms currently exploring this avenue? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    I’m an architect from Switzerland and I will relocate to Australia (Perth) on the 2nd May 2013.
    Thus I’m currently going through all the internet job recruitment sites looking for a job as an architect or architectural designer.
    In 2010 I was living in Australia for eight months for working (professional internship in Sydney with http://www.tektum.com.au, sustainable architecture established by Swiss architect), traveling and studying English in Perth and Sydney. So I’m a bit aware of the Australian working conditions.

    By accident I came across your blog and I really appreciate your contribution to a lively architectural culture in Perth.
    I would be happy for any assistance related to my job search as an oversea trained architect.
    If there are any websites or practices to be recommended I would be grateful.

    To my career objectives:
    I would like to obtain a meaningful, challenging and interesting position in a successful architectural practice that would allow me to gain an insight into the wide and extensive fields of architecture, including Concept, Construction,
    Project Control, Site Management, Competition and Urban Design.
    I wish to continue my architectural career, further my architecture training and ten-year professional experience gained in Switzerland and Australia.
